| Abstract: | The Hanle effect in UV spectral lines is a largely unexplored diagnostic of coronal magnetic fields with a very high potential. Therefore we propose a polarization sensitive spectrograph for the FUV/EUV spectral range as one of the key instruments of the COMPASS mission, which is proposed to ESA in response to the Cosmic Vision call for proposals. This instrument will help to close the serious gap in our knowledge about the corona by mapping the magnetic field in the solar transition region and corona, both on the solar disk and outside the solar limb. The Hanle effect in selected EUV lines is the most promising tool to fulfill this goal. Here we describe the conceptual approach and the design of the strawman instrument onboard COMPASS. |
