Abstract: The influence of the magnetic field on the distribution of atomic energy levels has been investigated for a long time in the field of physics, especially for the levels of hydrogen and helium. However, the research on the influence on the level population as well as the Gaunt factor is still lacking of enough attention. We present some results obtained first by analyzing the Stokes spectra of Fe~{\sc{i}} 6302.5 in the solar atmosphere, and then by an experiment with Na and Hg lines in the laboratory on Earth. It is found that the magnetic field induces an increase of the level population exponentially with the product of the Land\'e factor and the magnetic field strength.
